AI-Assisted Web Development in Practice: From Autocomplete to Agentic

The framing around AI coding tools changed significantly in 2025. The question stopped being “does it write good code?” and became “how autonomous can it be, and how do we manage that?” GitHub Copilot, Cursor, v0, and Windsurf all moved - at different speeds and with different approaches - from line-level autocomplete toward systems that plan, execute, and iterate on multi-step tasks across an entire codebase.

Understanding where each tool actually is, and what the workflow implications are, is more useful than the marketing summaries.

What Agentic Actually Means

The word gets overused, but in the context of 2025 tooling it has a specific meaning: the AI can take a task description, decompose it into steps, execute each step, observe the result, and adjust - without requiring manual approval at each stage. That is meaningfully different from “suggest the next line.”

GitHub Copilot’s /fleet command dispatches multiple agents in parallel via the CLI. Cursor’s Composer system handles “long-horizon agentic tasks” - refactors and feature additions that span many files. Vercel’s v0 plans its own task list when generating a full-stack app from a prompt, connecting to databases and wiring up routes as it goes, not just outputting static component code.

The practical difference: a well-scoped task that previously took a developer an hour of boilerplate writing can now be scaffolded in minutes. The developer’s job shifts toward reviewing, directing, and correcting - which is a different skill set from writing from scratch.

The Tools and How They Differ

  • GitHub Copilot: deepest IDE integration, strongest in existing codebases with established context, recently added language server integration for real code intelligence rather than pure token prediction. Geared toward teams that want agents embedded in an existing workflow.
  • Cursor: positions as a full agentic IDE. Its Cloud Agents run asynchronously so you can hand off a task and come back to a pull request. Design Mode lets you point at a live preview and describe visual changes, which the agent then translates back to code.
  • v0 by Vercel: best for greenfield generation: prompt to working app to one-click deploy. Less suited to deep work in a mature codebase, more suited to rapid prototyping and scaffolding.
  • Windsurf: acquired by Cognition in 2025, focused on deep codebase understanding via its Cascade system. Still evolving rapidly.

What These Tools Do Not Replace

A pattern that emerged clearly from real teams using these tools in production: AI agents are good at code that follows established patterns in the codebase, and much weaker at novel architecture decisions, security-sensitive code paths, and anything that requires reasoning about business requirements that are not explicitly documented.

Token cost management also became a real engineering concern. Long-running agents working over large codebases can burn through context windows and API budgets quickly. Teams are learning to scope tasks tightly rather than issuing broad “fix the whole auth system” instructions.

The other consistent finding: code review became more important, not less. Agents produce plausible-looking code that can have subtle logic errors. Developers who reduced review rigor to match the speed of generation regretted it. The right rhythm is faster generation paired with careful review, not generation replacing review.

What Changes for How We Work

The productivity gains are real and compounding. Boilerplate disappears. Repetitive transformations happen in seconds. New developers onboard faster because they can ask the agent what a piece of code does rather than hunting through docs. But the ceiling on what the tools can do autonomously is still lower than vendor messaging suggests.
