UPI and the Future of Frictionless Checkout for Indian E-Commerce

India’s payments landscape has undergone a transformation that is genuinely without parallel globally. UPI, the Unified Payments Interface built on NPCI’s rails, has moved from an ambitious experiment to the dominant payment method for online transactions in the country. For e-commerce businesses operating in India, understanding how to integrate and optimize around UPI isn’t optional. It’s foundational.
The Scale of What UPI Has Achieved
The numbers are difficult to fully internalize. UPI has consistently processed billions of transactions per month, with monthly volumes continuing to climb through 2025 and into 2026. The average transaction value has also been rising, a sign that consumers have become comfortable using the system for higher-value purchases, not just splitting bills or paying at kiranas.
A few things explain why UPI has achieved this level of adoption where other countries’ instant payment systems have stalled. It was built on open rails with interoperability at its core, so a PhonePe user can pay a Google Pay merchant without friction. It became ubiquitous at the physical point of sale first, which trained an enormous user base before e-commerce adoption accelerated. And it’s genuinely free to use, no transaction fees for consumers, and relatively low costs for merchants compared to card networks.
What “Frictionless Checkout” Means in Practice
Getting UPI integrated is the baseline. Building a checkout that actually converts well around it requires more nuance.
Collect intent early. The drop-off between cart and completed payment is highest when a user is surprised by the payment step. Displaying available payment methods, including UPI options, earlier in the flow reduces abandonment.
Support multiple UPI entry points. Some users prefer typing a UPI ID. Others prefer scanning a QR code. Mobile shoppers on apps they trust will use collect requests via their UPI app. A well-built checkout handles all of these without forcing users down a single path.
Reduce redirect round-trips. Every redirect, away from your checkout and back, is a drop-off risk. Payment gateway integrations that keep the UPI flow within the same window or use deep-linking to open the user’s preferred UPI app directly perform better than solutions that open external browser tabs.
Handle payment pending states clearly. UPI transactions can sit in a pending state when the user’s bank is slow to confirm. Checkouts that handle this gracefully, with clear status messaging and automatic polling, avoid users attempting duplicate payments out of confusion.
New Capabilities Worth Tracking
NPCI has been expanding UPI’s feature set steadily. UPI Lite, which processes small-value transactions off the main banking rails for speed and reliability, has seen growing integration. UPI for recurring payments, relevant for subscription commerce, has matured and is now supported by major payment gateways. UPI Circle, which allows delegated payments, is relevant for family accounts and business expense scenarios.
For cross-border commerce, UPI’s linkages with payment systems in multiple countries have expanded, which opens up inbound purchasing from the Indian diaspora and outbound travel commerce scenarios.
Beyond UPI: The Broader Checkout Picture
UPI dominates, but a complete Indian checkout still needs to accommodate credit and debit cards (especially for higher-value purchases where rewards and credit are relevant), BNPL options which have found strong adoption among younger shoppers, and net banking for specific demographics. The share of cash-on-delivery has declined, but it persists in certain geographies and product categories and ignoring it has a real cost in addressable market.
The practical goal is a checkout that presents each user with the method they’re most likely to use, pre-selected, with minimal steps between intent and confirmation.
