Beyond Text: How Multimodal AI Is Changing What Business Software Can Do

For most of the past two years, “using AI” in a business context meant sending text and getting text back. That framing is now too narrow. The models that led benchmarks in 2025 were all multimodal, able to process images, audio, and video alongside text, and to respond in kind. The practical consequences for software development and enterprise tooling are significant.

What Multimodal Actually Means in Practice

A multimodal model can take a photograph of a damaged product and describe the defect, transcribe a customer call and extract action items, read a chart from a PDF and explain the trend in plain language, or watch a screen recording and identify a UI bug. What makes these capabilities different from older specialized tools (OCR, speech-to-text, image classifiers) is that they handle all of this through a single model with general reasoning, so the outputs are coherent, contextual, and can be chained together.

In 2025, real-time voice was the multimodal capability that moved most visibly into production. Low-latency voice APIs from major model providers enabled natural spoken conversation with AI, not the stiff, scripted interactions of earlier voice bots. For customer service, voice-first mobile applications, and accessibility tooling, this was a qualitative shift.

Business Use Cases That Are Actually Working

The following areas saw strong real-world adoption across 2024–2025:

  • Document understanding at scale: Models that process PDFs containing mixed text, tables, and diagrams became practical for financial reports, engineering manuals, and regulatory filings. A compliance analyst can now ask “what are the key obligations in this 200-page contract?” and get a grounded answer.
  • Meeting intelligence: Platforms that transcribe, summarize, and extract decisions from recorded meetings became standard in many enterprise environments. Multilingual transcription improved substantially, relevant for Indian teams working across languages.
  • Visual QA and inspection: Manufacturing, logistics, and retail companies piloted AI visual inspection where a model flags anomalies in product or shelf images in real time. The barrier here dropped because multimodal APIs made it feasible without training a custom vision model.
  • Voice-to-workflow automation: Customer calls processed end-to-end, transcribed, intent-classified, routed, and logged, without a human listening to each one.

The Audio Overview Moment

One under-discussed development was the popularity of tools that convert documents to audio summaries. Google’s NotebookLM, which can generate a natural-sounding podcast-style audio discussion from uploaded documents, gained significant enterprise interest for training materials, research briefings, and internal comms. It’s an early indicator of how business content consumption habits may shift, reading is not always the most efficient format.

Design Considerations for Multimodal Integrations

Building applications that use multimodal inputs introduces challenges beyond standard API integration:

  • Latency management: Voice applications have strict latency requirements (under 300ms for natural conversation). Audio streaming APIs require different infrastructure patterns than batch text calls.
  • Cost per token: Image and audio inputs cost significantly more than text per API call. High-volume applications need careful cost modeling.
  • Privacy and data handling: Sending images of documents, faces, or facilities to third-party APIs requires explicit data governance decisions, especially under India’s DPDP framework.
  • Fallback handling: Multimodal inputs can fail in ways text inputs don’t, poor image quality, background noise, mixed-language audio. Robust fallback paths are essential.

What Teams Should Be Evaluating Now

If your product currently handles documents, calls, images, or video, even if those inputs are processed by separate specialized tools, it’s worth evaluating whether a multimodal integration can simplify the pipeline while improving output quality. The answer isn’t always yes, but the economics and capability of these models shifted enough in 2025 that assessments from 2023 are likely outdated.
